In Bangladesh, our work spans legal aid support, litigation, community-based justice initiatives, and capacity-building for partners and legal professionals.

Role Overview

We are looking for a dedicated and experienced Legal Officer to support and strengthen our legal programming in Bangladesh. The role includes litigation support, legal aid service delivery, coordination with panel lawyers, community engagement, and contributing to strategic legal and advocacy initiatives.

The position is ideal for someone with strong experience in Dhaka's lower courts, excellent drafting skills, and a deep commitment to human rights and social justice.

Key Responsibilities

Litigation & Legal Aid

Provide litigation and pre-litigation support in both criminal and civil matters, including case preparation, drafting, filing, and witness coordination.

Liaise with panel lawyers and law firms; monitor ongoing cases and attend key hearings as needed.

Manage beneficiary referrals and ensure timely progression of legal matters.

Community Legal Support

Organise and conduct legal aid clinics, counselling sessions, and community legal awareness activities with partners and pro bono lawyers.

Support documentation, reporting, and effective record management for legal aid activities.

Capacity Building & Training

Develop and deliver training modules for lawyers, legal professionals, and community groups on legal literacy and thematic issues.

Contribute to workshops, consultations, and professional development events.

Research & Advocacy

Conduct research on emerging legal issues and opportunities for strategic litigation.

Contribute to reports, briefs, case summaries, and advocacy materials.

Represent iProbono Bangladesh at meetings, consultations, and external forums.

Operational Support

Assist the Programme Manager and South Asia team with planning, documentation, financial coordination, and reporting.

Support cross-team collaboration within the wider iProbono network.

Required Skills & Experience

LL.B. with 5–7 years, or LL.M. with 4–6 years of post-qualification experience.

Must be enrolled as an Advocate at the Dhaka Bar Association.

Strong practical experience in litigation at the lower courts (criminal and civil).

Excellent legal drafting, client counselling, and case management skills.

Strong understanding of human rights issues and the civil society landscape in Bangladesh.

Proven ability to engage with lawyers, bar associations, and law firms.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills in Bangla and English (Bangla typing required).

Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and familiarity with tools like Slack or project management systems.

Ability to manage multiple cases, travel domestically, and work in a collaborative, high-integrity environment.
