The Legal and Compliance Lawyer will ensure that organisational activities and operations are conducted in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and organisational policies and procedures. The role is responsible for providing legal support, managing litigation, assessing legal risks, financial recovery or results favourable to the organisation, and promoting a culture of compliance across the organisation. The position aims to protect the organisation's legal interests, minimise legal exposure, and ensure ethical practices in alignment with organisational values.

Key Responsibilities:

• Prepare and manage litigation of cheque dishonours under the Negotiable Instruments (NI) Act, from filing to recovery.
• Conduct legal research, draft and review of pleadings, affidavits, settlements and other legal documents on any criminal and civil litigation processes of lower court (including tribunals, special courts, other forums) compliant with applicable procedures and evidentiary standards.
• Ensure timely submission of required legal documents and litigation documents and reports to relevant courts, tribunals, forums or authorities.
• Provide legal support and assistance on applications, claims and disputes before tribunals, special courts, and alternative dispute resolution (ADR).
• Monitor litigation and dispute resolution timelines and ensure timely filing of documents and appearances by external lawyers and organisation representatives.
• Monitor employment related litigation and provide support required.
• Provide relevant and timely support in appeals, reviews and revisions, including at the Supreme Court of Bangladesh.
• Prepare legal assessments on potential and ongoing litigation for practical and lawful recovery or results in favour of the organisation.
• Arrange meetings, prepare minutes, report accordingly and ensure follow-up of decisions.
• Maintain and update litigation files, databases, registers, diaries and records up to date.
• Maintain complete and accurate financial records related to work and office.
• Maintain liaison and follow up activities and monitor performance of Panel Lawyers.
• Visit courts, tribunals, arbitration, govt. offices, law chambers, other organisation offices and other places, if necessary for performance of tasks.
• Provide reports, as directed or requested.
• Understand and ensure compliance with organisational policies, procedure and values.
• Provide legal support to staff or the organisation, as instructed by supervisors.
• Stay updated on relevant laws, rules, and regulations affecting the organisation.
• Any other task assigned by supervisors.

Safeguarding Responsibilities:

• Ensure the safety of Programme Participants, people who come into contact with the organisation and team members from any harm, abuse, neglect, harassment and exploitation including sexual exploitation and abuse (SEA) to achieve the programme's goals of safeguarding implementation. Act as a key source of support, guidance and expertise on safeguarding for establishing a safe working environment.
• Practice, promote and endorse the issues of safeguarding policy among team members and ensure the implementation of safeguarding standards in every course of action.
• Follow the safeguarding reporting procedure in case any reportable incident takes place and encourage others to do so.

Educational Requirements:

Bachelors' degree in Law from a recognised institution with sound knowledge of the Bangladesh legal and justice system, including the Negotiable Instruments Act, Penal Code, Civil and Criminal Procedure, Evidence Act, Specific Relief Act, Limitation Act, Contract Act, Consumer Rights Protection Act, Business/Commercial Law, women's legal protection laws, cyber laws, and legal drafting and conveyancing.

Experience Requirements:

One year legal practice in court is preferrable.
