UNESCO Core Values: Commitment to the Organization, Integrity, Respect for Diversity, Professionalism
OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POSTMore than one million Rohingya Forcibly Displaced Myanmar Nationals (FDMNs) from Myanmar are being hosted in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh. The displacement has become a protracted crisis since the largest influx in 2017. UNESCO is supporting the response by providing technical support for education and skills development opportunities to the Rohingya and Host Communities, in collaboration with international and national organisations. Within the education sector, UNESCO is a grantee and consortium partner for the Education Cannot Wait (ECW) Multi-Year Resilience Programme II (MYRP II). A key initiative of the MYRP II has been the rollout of the Myanmar Curriculum in order to support the Government of Bangladesh's strategy of safe and sustainable repatriation of FDMNs.
With additional support from Global Affairs Canada, UNESCO is implementing Burmese Language Training for Teachers. The aim of the activity is to equip volunteer teachers with the linguistic skills necessary to deliver quality education to Rohingya children and the refugee community in Cox's Bazar using the Myanmar national language. To support this, UNESCO is mobilising qualified Language Trainers who are native speakers of the Myanmar national language and have experience implementing the Myanmar Curriculum. These Trainers will play a dual role: (1) delivering high-quality language instruction, while mentoring and building the long-term capacity of FDMN co-trainers; and (2) supporting the implementation and monitoring of the Myanmar Curriculum across the Cox's Bazar education response.
Leveraging their language skills and education expertise, Language Trainers will help strengthen curriculum implementation through technical feedback, lesson observation, and support to implementing partners. Their presence addresses a critical capacity gap among MYRP II partners and grant agents—many of whom lack the language proficiency needed for in-depth monitoring and quality assurance of Myanmar Curriculum delivery. Their contribution is essential to ensure alignment between local implementation and national education standards in Myanmar, enabling FDMN children to achieve education outcomes equivalent to their peers inside Myanmar.
TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the guidance of the MYRP II Project Officer, and in coordination with the technical and implementing partners, the tasks and responsibilities of the assignment are as follows:
- Plan and deliver Burmese Language classes to teachers in FDMN camps for 4–6 hours per day, 4 days a week.
- Plan and deliver lessons aligned with the needs of FDMN volunteer teachers and/or NGO staff, in line with the pre-prepared learning resources.

- Maintain detailed lesson notes and records.
- Participate in CPD (Continuous Professional Development) workshops and training sessions and take a proactive attitude towards demonstrating professional development.
- Collaborate with assistant trainers from the host community to overcome language and cultural barriers.
- Mentor and support FDMN co-trainers, with the objective of building their independent capacity to lead Burmese Language Training Sessions over time.
- Support the monitoring of Myanmar Curriculum implementation, including observation of classroom teaching by volunteer teachers and identification of barriers, challenges or needs.
- Contribute to reflection sessions, session adaptation, and the continual improvement of training delivery.
